BMW Extended Car Warranty

BMW’s Motorplan covers services and roadside assistance for 5 years or 100 000 km — but it does not cover mechanical failure. Once the separate three-year factory warranty lapses, BMW-specific repair costs become your liability. Dealer labour rates are among the highest in the South African market.
An independent extended warranty from Warranty Extender gives you post-Motorplan mechanical cover, backed by FSP-regulated providers.
What’s covered
Engine & Timing Chain
Timing chain tensioner, VANOS units, turbocharger, oil separator, cylinder head and all internal engine components.
ZF Gearbox
Automatic gearbox internals, torque converter and mechatronics unit.
Electrical & DME
Engine management (DME), ABS, DSC and associated sensors and modules.
Cooling System
Electric water pump, thermostat housing, expansion tank and coolant hoses.
Fuel System
High-pressure fuel pump (HPFP), injectors and fuel rail on TFSI and diesel variants.
24/7 Roadside Assistance

Known BMW failure areas
BMW's engineering is exceptional, but several specific engine and gearbox failure areas are well-documented across the South African BMW range — and these are not wear-and-tear items.
Timing chain guide failure on the N20 petrol engine (fitted to 1 Series, 3 Series, X1 and X3) is one of BMW's most discussed faults. The original plastic timing chain guides on pre-2015 N20 engines are prone to cracking and breaking from thermal stress, allowing the timing chain to become slack. In severe cases, the chain skips or breaks — causing piston-to-valve contact and catastrophic engine damage. Many South African examples are now outside BMW's extended coverage for this fault.
N47 diesel timing chain failure affects BMW diesel models including the 320d, 520d and X3 20d. The N47's timing chain is located at the rear of the engine, meaning complete engine removal is required for replacement — an expensive, labour-intensive job. A rattling noise on start-up is the classic early warning sign. Ignoring it typically leads to complete timing chain failure and severe engine damage.
Electric water pump failure is documented across multiple BMW petrol engine families. Unlike conventional mechanical water pumps, BMW's electric pump can fail without warning, causing sudden engine overheating. Replacement involves specialist labour and is a genuine mechanical component failure — not a service item.
Am I eligible?
Your BMW qualifies if:
- Under 200 000 km at time of application
- No older than 15 model years
- Private vehicle use
- Verifiable full or partial service history
What about the BMW Motorplan?
The BMW Motorplan covers scheduled services — it does not cover unexpected mechanical failure. Once your three-year factory warranty expires, you need a separate extended warranty. Our plans work alongside any remaining Motorplan cover you may still have.
