What is it?

What Is an Extended Service Plan?

An extended service plan (also called an extended maintenance plan) covers your vehicle’s manufacturer-specified scheduled services after the original service plan expires.

Unlike an extended warranty — which covers mechanical breakdowns — a service plan covers routine maintenance. In short: it keeps your vehicle running the way it was designed to.

  • Engine oil and oil filter changes
  • Air, fuel and cabin filters
  • Brake fluid replacement
  • Spark plugs (where applicable)
  • Service-related consumables
  • Labour and diagnostics
  • Manufacturer-recommended service intervals

Why it matters in South Africa

SA driving conditions are demanding. Without consistent servicing, vehicles are more likely to experience:

  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Reduced engine efficiency
  • Shortened component lifespan
  • Higher long-term repair costs
  • Decreased resale value

Key advantages
Why choose an extended service plan?

Protects Long-Term Engine Health

Regular oil and filter changes are essential for maintaining engine performance, reducing internal wear, and extending the lifespan of critical components.

Maintains Manufacturer Service Standards

Following scheduled service intervals ensures your vehicle is maintained according to manufacturer guidelines, preserving mechanical integrity and long-term value.

Reduces Financial Stress

Fixed monthly payments eliminate large, unexpected service invoices and make vehicle maintenance easier to budget for.

Supports Stronger Resale Value

A complete, documented service history increases buyer confidence and strengthens your position during resale or trade-in negotiations.

Encourages Preventative Care

Vehicles that are serviced consistently are far less likely to develop major mechanical issues, helping you avoid costly long-term repairs.

Frequently asked questions

Is a service plan the same as motor insurance?

No. A service plan covers the cost of the scheduled services as per the manufacturer's service guide — this includes items like filters, oils and plugs but excludes items such as brakes, shocks or wiper blades.

Does a service plan cover labour, or only parts?

The service plan covers the full cost of the service, including labour, for all scheduled work as per the service manual. It excludes parts and labour for additional repairs that are not part of the scheduled service.

What happens when my factory service plan runs out?

Once the plan's kilometre or time limit is reached, you pay for services out of pocket unless you take out an extended service plan to continue the same cover. Check both limits on your plan — whichever is reached first ends the cover, even if the other hasn't.

Is it worth buying a service plan on a used car?

It depends on your needs and how many times you need to service each year. Plans are best suited to vehicles doing around 20,000km a year on 15,000km service intervals — roughly one service every 8 months — since that pace makes the most of the plan's duration. If you only service once a year, you get the benefit of 4 years' cover while paying for 3. Plans aren't designed for vehicles needing two or more services a year. A service plan provides the convenience of planning ahead for your routine servicing costs, removing the need to dip into your cash reserves when the time to service comes around. Just make sure the services on the vehicle are up to date, and note any waiting period the plan may have before your next due service.

Does a service plan actually save money over paying as you go?

It can, since it locks in today's labour and parts pricing against rising costs over the plan's term, and although it may not always work out cheaper, it definitely makes it easier to pay for those costly major services. If your goal is to cut costs, it's worth comparing the plan cost against your expected number of services over the term.
