Extended Car Warranty

Citroën Extended Car Warranty

Citroën Extended Warranty South Africa

The Citroën range offers a distinctive alternative to mainstream SUVs and hatchbacks, with strong standard specification and Stellantis engineering backing. The C3 Aircross and C5 Aircross are the most common models on South African roads, and both carry Citroën's 5-year/100 000 km factory warranty.

Once the factory warranty expires, French car repair costs in South Africa are well-documented. Parts availability has improved significantly since Citroën's return to the market, but workshop expertise outside major centres remains limited — making an extended motor warranty particularly valuable for Citroën owners.

Known Citroën failure areas

Citroën's PureTech 1.2T turbocharged petrol engine and EAT automatic gearboxes carry documented failure areas that are not wear-and-tear items — and not covered under standard service plans.

PureTech 1.2T timing belt failure is the most serious documented fault across the C3 Aircross, C5 Aircross and C4. The 1.2-litre PureTech engine uses a wet timing belt that runs in engine oil. On pre-2020 models, this belt can shed fibres as it ages — the fibres clog oil channels and the oil pump strainer, ultimately starving the engine of lubrication. In the worst cases, this causes catastrophic engine failure requiring a complete engine replacement. A rattling noise on start-up is the classic early warning. Citroën issued a recall for affected vehicles, but unaffected examples are still at risk as mileage builds.

EAT6/EAT8 automatic gearbox faults are documented across the Citroën range. The 6-speed EAT6 and 8-speed EAT8 automatic gearboxes can exhibit jerky, hesitant gear changes — particularly at low speeds and cold starts. This is caused by clutch plate wear or faults in the gearbox control electronics. Gearbox repairs are expensive and are genuine mechanical component failures covered under an extended warranty.

Electrical and module failures are more prevalent on Citroën models than on Japanese competitors, with random warning lights, infotainment failures and sensor module faults documented across the C3 Aircross and C5 Aircross. Physical module replacement is a warranty claim item — not a service item.
