Jaecoo J5 Extended Car Warranty

The Jaecoo J5 is the compact SUV from Chery Group’s Jaecoo brand, sold in South Africa with a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine (115 kW / 230 Nm) and a CVT automatic, in Core, Vortex, Glacier and Inferno specifications. It ranked tenth among South Africa’s best-selling Chinese vehicles in the first half of 2026, with 1,568 units sold. In 2026 Jaecoo also announced hybrid and battery-electric J5 derivatives for the local range.
As a newer brand with a fast-growing parc, the J5 is increasingly appearing on the used market. An extended motor warranty keeps repair costs predictable once the original cover runs out or no longer applies to you.
Jaecoo J5 Factory Warranty and Service Plan — What You Started With
- Vehicle warranty: 5 years / 150,000 km
- Service plan: 5 years / 75,000 km (Core: 2 years / 30,000 km)
- Engine warranty: 10 years / 1 million km (first owner only)
These are the terms announced at launch; confirm the terms on your specific vehicle with the dealer. The entry-level Core comes with a much shorter service plan than the higher specifications, and the long engine warranty is limited to the first owner — a used buyer should confirm what engine cover, if any, still applies to their vehicle.

Known Jaecoo J5 Problems and Complaints to Date
Here is what has been reported so far. Findings from regulators and road tests are stated as such; owner anecdote is flagged as anecdote. Long-term reliability data is limited because the model is new.
CVT drone and strained overtaking (road-test finding)
Under a hard overtake the CVT holds the engine around 5,700 rpm and the drone fills the cabin; CAR magazine also reported mechanical noise intruding into the cabin and an engine that felt strained when overtaking. The transmission is described as perfectly adequate when driven below about 3,000 rpm.
Fuel use above the claim (road-test finding)
Jaecoo claims 7.5 L/100 km. One test returned 7.9 L/100 km, but the long-term memory showed 11.2 L/100 km, and CAR magazine saw the onboard computer hovering around 11.3 L/100 km even in Eco mode. One reviewer expects real-world owners to see roughly 8.0 to 8.5 L/100 km.
Infotainment and connectivity (road-test finding)
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connections failed to connect or dropped out during testing, and climate and drive-mode settings sit in touchscreen menus with no physical climate buttons, taking the driver’s eyes off the road for longer than ideal.
Front-wheel spin in Sport mode (road-test finding)
In Sport mode the J5 has a tendency to spin its front wheels eagerly.
Short service plan on the Core
The entry-level Core carries a 2-year / 30,000 km service plan, against 5 years / 75,000 km on the higher specifications. Keeping to the manufacturer’s servicing schedule is a condition of most warranties, so Core owners pick up servicing costs sooner.
Limited long-term data
The J5 is new to South Africa, so there is no long-term reliability record yet. We found no South African recall for the J5 in the sources reviewed.

Why a Jaecoo J5 Owner Might Want Extended Cover
Buying a used J5. The 10-year engine warranty is limited to the first owner, so a second owner may have less engine protection than the brochure suggests. An extended warranty puts a defined level of cover in place from day one.
Core owners with a short service plan. The Core’s 2-year / 30,000 km service plan ends early, which makes keeping to the manufacturer’s servicing schedule — a condition of most warranties — the owner’s responsibility sooner.
A CVT and a turbo engine. The J5 pairs a turbocharged 1.5-litre engine with a continuously variable transmission. Both are specialist components where a single failure outside warranty can be an expensive workshop bill.
