The Volkswagen Tiguan sits at the premium end of the family SUV market in South Africa — a well-engineered vehicle with genuine European refinement and strong residual values. Known VW Tiguan failure areas

DSG mechatronic unit failure is the most expensive and most commonly reported fault on the Tiguan. The mechatronic unit — the hydraulic and electronic controller for the DSG gearbox — can fail, resulting in jerky shifts, loss of drive or complete gearbox lockout. Replacement costs exceed R30 000 and the unit is fully covered under extended warranty.

TSI engine timing chain tensioner failure is well-documented on the 1.4 TSI engine. A failing tensioner causes chain rattle on cold start and, if ignored, timing chain skip or breakage. This is a mechanical component failure and fully covered under warranty.

Haldex coupling failure on 4Motion models is reported at higher mileages, particularly when the Haldex oil has not been changed at the correct interval. Loss of rear-wheel drive is the primary symptom. Haldex replacement is expensive and covered in full under extended warranty.

Water pump failure on the 1.4 TSI and 2.0 TDI engines is documented at higher mileages. Both the mechanical and electric supplementary water pump variants are covered under extended warranty.
