What Happens After the Kia Sportage’s Factory Warranty Ends
The fifth-generation Kia Sportage went on sale in South Africa in September 2022. It is petrol only, with a 1.6-litre turbo and a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox; Kia dropped the turbodiesel for this generation. Kia Sportage Factory Warranty and Service Plan — What You Started With

- Service plan: 6 years / 90,000 km (at the September 2022 launch)
The warranty is long, but the service plan is capped at 90,000 km, so a high-mileage Sportage can run out of plan before it runs out of warranty. Confirm the terms on your car with a Kia dealer.

The fifth-generation Sportage is longer than its predecessor, with a 591-litre boot against 466 litres, and carries over the 1.6 T-GDI turbo petrol engine from the previous model.

Known Kia Sportage Problems to Date
We found no South African buyer’s guide with a documented fault list for the current Sportage, and no South African recall, so we don’t publish an invented one. We quote no repair costs.
Dual-clutch gearbox
All current Sportages use a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. An Australian buying guide (not South African) advises testing the 1.6 turbo’s gearbox for shudder or jerkiness when creeping, which can indicate overheating or wear. Dual-clutch units are complex and costly to repair out of warranty, but there is no published South African fault record for this gearbox yet.
Overseas recall activity
An Australian recall database lists a fuel-leak recall on the fifth-generation Sportage, with the high-pressure fuel pump, pipe and rail to be replaced. We could not confirm whether South African cars were affected, so check any Sportage by VIN with a Kia dealer.
