What Happens After the Toyota RAV4’s 3-Year / 100,000 km Warranty Ends
The Toyota RAV4 is a practical family SUV, and the 2.5 Hybrid E-Four has grown in popularity as fuel prices have risen. Toyota revised the South African range in March 2022, dropping the base GX and adding two hybrid models, so the oldest cars of this generation are now leaving factory cover.

Toyota RAV4 Factory Warranty and Service Plan — What You Started With
- Vehicle warranty: 3 years / 100,000 km
- Service plan: 6 services / 90,000 km, at 12-month or 15,000 km intervals
- Hybrid battery: 8 years, quoted as 195,000 km by one source and 160,000 km by another
Per published Toyota terms, the vehicle warranty covers mechanical or electrical failure caused by manufacturing defects, is transferable if the vehicle is sold, and does not cover tyres, batteries (12V), normal wear and tear, or routine servicing. It can be refused if servicing or repairs were done outside an authorised Toyota dealer. Confirm the terms, and the hybrid battery distance, with a Toyota dealer.
Toyota RAV4: The 2022 South African Range
The March 2022 update left the range as GX-R and VX, with a hybrid on both.

Known Toyota RAV4 Problems to Date
We found no South African buyer’s guide with a documented fault list for this generation of RAV4, and the claims we saw about CVT shudder and hybrid battery faults came from sources that cited no data, so we don’t repeat them. We quote no repair costs.
CVT care
The 2.0 and the hybrid both use CVTs. As with any CVT car, buyers are advised to test-drive before deciding and to ask for evidence that CVT fluid was serviced at the correct interval.
Recalls
In August 2026 Toyota recalled 518 vehicles in South Africa over a combination-meter (instrument cluster) programming fault, including 16 RAV4 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) units built from 8 July 2024; the fix is a free dealer reprogramming. The PHEV is a separate model from the cars on this page. A 2016 RAV4 recall covered cars built between 2006 and 2012 and does not apply to this generation. Check any RAV4 by VIN with a Toyota dealer.

Why Toyota RAV4 Owners Choose an Extended Warranty
Once the 3-year / 100,000 km warranty ends, a CVT, hybrid-system or electronics repair falls on the owner, and factory cover can be refused if servicing or repairs were done outside the Toyota network. The hybrid battery has its own longer cover, so extended cover matters most for the rest of the drivetrain — ask Cheryl what a policy covers on hybrid-specific parts.
