Extended Car Warranty

Warranty vs Guarantee — Understanding the Differences

These two words are used interchangeably by most people, but in the context of a used motor car, they mean very different things.

What is a Guarantee?

A guarantee is a promise provided when you buy consumer goods that the product will live up to expectations — or you can ask for a replacement or your money back. In the case of a used motor car, it is essentially impossible to offer a true guarantee. A car has too many wear-and-tear items, too many variables in how it has been driven and maintained, for a blanket guarantee to be reasonable or enforceable.

When a used car dealer says a car comes with a “guarantee”, they typically mean a short dealer warranty covering major mechanical defects for 30 to 90 days. It is not the same as a manufacturer’s guarantee.

What is a Warranty?

A warranty is more like an insurance policy. Specific parts of a car are covered at a set cost. If a covered component fails, the warranty pays for the repair or replacement — up to the allocated budget for that component.

Different warranty plans give different levels of cover. A more comprehensive plan allocates a higher budget to major components like the engine and gearbox, and covers more systems.

What warranties do NOT cover

It is important to understand that certain items are excluded from all motor warranties because they are considered wear-and-tear or scheduled service items. These include:

These items are covered by a service plan or maintenance plan — not a warranty.

Which do you need?

For a used car, you need a motor warranty — not a guarantee. A warranty protects you against the unexpected mechanical and electrical failures that are a reality with any used vehicle. A service plan keeps it properly maintained. Together they give you complete cover.
